What gauge is and why it matters
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows in a fixed area, usually 10×10 cm (4×4 in). Even with the same yarn and needles, everyone's tension differs — so your gauge will differ. Pattern measurements are calculated from the pattern's gauge; if yours doesn't match, the finished size won't either. A difference of one stitch per 10 cm compounds into several centimeters across a sweater chest.
That's why you swatch before starting: knit at least 12×12 cm, then count stitches and rows across the center 10 cm, away from the edges.
