What filet crochet is
Filet crochet builds pictures and lettering from a grid of filled blocks and open spaces, using only double crochet and chain stitches. Since it takes just two stitches, it's beginner-friendly — and with a grid chart you can make anything: curtains, blankets, tea mats, bags.
How to use this editor
In the text tab, type a phrase and it generates a grid chart with your chosen font style and weight — great for monogrammed mats and name blankets. In the image tab, upload a picture and it converts light and dark areas into open and filled cells.
After converting, refine cell by cell. Paint by row or column, mirror horizontally or vertically, invert, and use zoom and coordinates to work comfortably on large charts.
Export as PNG/PDF, optionally with written row-by-row instructions (row N: X blocks, Y spaces) for anyone who prefers text over charts.
Choosing yarn and size
Filet is traditionally worked in fine cotton thread, but the same chart in worsted-weight yarn becomes a bold blanket. Enter your yarn thickness and the editor estimates the finished size from the cell dimensions. Lettering needs at least 5–7 cells of height to stay legible.
