Color Palette

Every knitter has picked colors that looked great side by side in the shop, only to find the finished fabric looks off. The reason: colors read differently in the skein and in the fabric. Stockinette blends smoothly, garter stitch mixes two colors in waves, and stranded colorwork blends them into tiny dots that read as an in-between shade from a distance. The same two colors give completely different results depending on the technique.

Pick colors in the simulator and switch between techniques — stockinette, garter, stripes, Fair Isle, intarsia. It previews real fabric textures so you can validate a combination before casting on. Adjust rows per color to experiment with stripe proportions.

Watch the contrast indicator. For colorwork patterns to pop, value (lightness) contrast matters more than hue. If two colors are indistinguishable in a black-and-white photo, the motif will mush together. This tool rates value contrast automatically.
