Turn any image into a pattern

This tool turns any image into a chart for colorwork knitting (intarsia, Fair Isle) or crochet pixel blankets. Upload a photo or drawing and it pixelates it to your chosen color count and width in stitches — one cell equals one stitch. You can then edit the chart pixel by pixel and export it as PNG or a print-ready PDF.

Fewer colors are easier to knit. Start with 3–5 colors; managing yarn changes and floats gets much harder as the count grows.

High-contrast images convert best. The bigger the difference between subject and background, the better the shape survives with few colors. Logos, illustrations, and characters with clear shapes work better than busy photos.

Choose the width together with your yarn weight and target size. If your gauge is 20 stitches per 10 cm, a 60-stitch chart comes out about 30 cm wide. Knit stitches are wider than tall, so choosing your technique corrects the aspect ratio.

Charts you generate are yours to use freely, including for items you sell — just make sure you have the rights to the image you upload. Export with a grid overlay or a symbol version (color-blind friendly), handy for printing and marking off rows as you go.
